Official Nomination form Super trooper award Sponsored by the Skovira family in conjunction with Tri-valley horseman’s association, inc. |
I first came up with the idea for an award for horse that gives his/her all and has enriched a person’s life almost a year ago. My inspiration is our family’s registered American Quarter Horse “Jody Tatum”. Jody first came into our lives at the age of 18. I was looking for a “bomb proof” horse for my then 9 year old daughter to show walk/jog. After a year of looking for almost a year and then someone suggested we go and look at a horse Dee Hillis was boarding. We went to see him on a cold day in January 1998, will an inch of snow down and a horse that hadn’t been ridden since the previous October my daughter took a turn around an open field and fell in love. Jody was a horse that has been in the area since 1988. A Walton women bought him after he did some Quarter horse circuit in the Midwest. I was not in the least deter about his age or that he had laminitis. Ashley spent the next two years bonding, learning and winning some blues with Jody. He broke- in a novice family to showing will very little problems, and it is my understanding that we weren’t the first family to learn with him. As Jody aged the wear and tear of being a western pleasure horse wore on his body. When Ashley went toward loping we were told by the vet that Jody probably wouldn’t hold up to a full season of showing. We searched for a younger horse for Ashley and found a flea bitten grey mare. When Ashley changed horses she found just how much the Jody helped her with her riding. I knew that Jody would correct wrong commands for gaits; keep himself on the rail and basically the child sat on the horse. I had to occasion to ride Jody a few times myself and learned how talented and forgiving he really was. I could swear that the horse listened to the announcer and understood them. Today Jody is 29 and healthy and just loves when Ashley jumps on him bareback and they go riding threw the pines or down to the creek. This is a horse that would do anything for anyone of us, but especially the children. With the years I have had to have hocks injected, chiropractic to a sore back and the daily medicine for the laminitis, but I would spent what ever it took to have him live out his life in comfort. I feel that this horse has earned his retirement a 100 times over. Jody Tatum is the Skovira Family’s “SUPER TROOPER”
